Unpacking the Gender binary

This 2-hour workshop, led by SHIFT facilitators, is designed to explore the ways we have internalized and externalized a culture that classifies gender only into two classifications: masculine & feminine, and how that understanding is connected to gender-based discrimination and harm. We will explore the gender binary and gender bias through a lens of power, in order to unpack the ways it enables sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and more. Doing so leads us to better understand - and challenge - the ways it shows up in our workspaces and community spaces.

Racial equity email template

Many of us are trying to push our companies and organizations to stand in solidarity with anti-racism practices, so we wanted to offer this email template with requests for specific actions from your workplace. This specific example was compiled in the Summer of 2020 and can be adapted for other justice-oriented advocacy in the workplace.

DISABILITY JUSTICE

Here you can find resources that continually ground and inform us in our approach, practice, and constant studentship with disability justice work. We find it helpful to understand what ableism and how pervasive it is (definition by Talila "TL" Lewis), recognize the movement work from disability access to justice as laid out by Mia Mingus, and how we must always center and follow Disability Justice leadership as it is the heart of all of our justice movements. Disability Justice teaches us that every human is valuable, no human is disposable. This also directly relates to all the conversations we have learned from the Black Lives Matter movement, LGBTQIA+ activists, abolitionists, immigration activists, reproductive justice work, and ALL social justice movements. These efforts must exist hand in hand.

anti-racism toolkit for midwives

SHIFT partnered with Midwives of Color Committee (MOCC) to create Unpacking our Birth Bag: Anti-Racism Toolkit for Midwives. This project was led by Aaliyah Sade, SHIFT facilitator, birth worker, and student midwife. We are so honored to support midwives and birth workers, who, now more than ever, are so crucial to the reproductive justice movement.

This Toolkit should be used to unpack racism and privilege from your “birth bag” in hopes of restoring culturally competent care and making the midwifery profession more inclusive to all. Download below.
